I Have a Literacy Dream

I have been fascinated with the dictionary tool-tip - a add-on and have used it quite extensively.
I would like to add a dictionary to that tool-tip, a picture dictionary for young readers.
I can see how technology can help with decoding and vocabulary with this new dictionary.
I am making my first attempt at this dictionary [...]

Organize Research for Your Students

I was working with a teacher the other day who wanted his/her students to make a brochure about regions of New York State. She/He is a veteran teacher who does not normally use technology - so keep that in mind.
As I watched this experience unfold, I jumped in to help the kids and her - [...]

Prescribing Solutions for Literacy Challenges - NYSCATE, 2007

According to the Reading Rockets web site
(http://www.readingrockets.org/helping), 40% of children struggle with
reading. In a class of 20 kids, that is 8 out of 12.
Do you know how to help them? Do you know what to tell their parents?
Imagine a child saying these words to you:
“I feel like I just use the same words over and [...]

Just Another Reason for Schools to Adopt Firefox

One of my graduate students found this Firefox Add-on for me this past week.  It is called Addictive Typing Lessons. I plan doing a thorough review of it tomorrow - but for now, it looks very promising.

A Vision for Technology - the End Result

I think our world is getting a little closer to my vision with technology with devices like the iPhone and other mobile devices.  I think the vision for technology is simple.
The End Result:
One must be able to access information, process information and do something with that information at anytime and at any place.
Self-Directed Learning.

When [...]

Vocabulary - Defined with the Dictionary Tool-tip - a OLPC Tip

Defining Vocabulary words is common practice in schools today. Most students use the glossary of the text book or a dictionary. For those in a One Laptop Per Child School, using Firefox and the add-on, the dictionary tool tip, can accomplish this task and a little bit more.
This assumes that you have downloaded Firefox [...]

Google Calendar in Firefox Sidebar - a modest hack - really modest

A few years ago, there was a Firefox add-on that one could use that would display a small calendar in the sidebar of Firefox. I went searching this morning and could not find it.
All I wanted was a calendar that would show the month in the Firefox sidebar (and the ability to navigate to other [...]
