Compose Sentences with a Word Bank

There are two advantages to “writing” on the computer.

  1. Editing is much easier
  2. Sharing to a wide audience is increased

The problem with “writing” on a computer is keyboarding.  Students do not practice keyboarding frequently enough to improve their skills.  I have been thinking a lot about this dilemma and have begun work on this dilemma.

I decided to use the blog feature, which I call Word Banks, of my classroom web site for the following reasons:

  1. I could add html to my post and thus add color and styles (bold, italic, etc.) which makes it easier to read.
  2. My word banks do not disappear when the kids move words to the comment section
  3. I can protect this section from inappropriate comments through moderation.

Visit this site and try to create sentences about a monster by highlighting words and click-hold-drag them to the comment section.

The Kid’s Poetry Page is a site that does a similar thing. It has a much nicer interface, but I can’t control what words to use.
