Day 2, September 29th (The Gang’s Western Trip)
My Dad sent this to me. He and my step mom, aunt and uncle are traveling west in an RV. Two former school teachers/principals and two Italians (I means Sicilians – but they are such great ladies) – can’t wait to read their daily posts
Day 2 – Sept 29th
Last night went pretty well – no rain – no leaks. The campground had
nice showers so three of the four of us decided to use them. Denny,
the adventurous one, decided to shower in the shower closet. I said
to Paula, when we get home, we can all live in your bathroom for 30
days. We have done a little wheezing from laughing.
It only took us 1 hour to get the RV set up for bed. Watching Bob
and Denny try to put sheets on while on the bed was quite
entertaining. When I went to get my nightgown, I found it soaked.
Evidently, the rain from the morning found another opening above the
back bed.
Before bed, we decided to watch the Young and the Restless. Denny
tried, (without success) MULTIPLE TIMES to get it to play. We can
now recite the fantasy football commercial from heart. Denny decided
it was the TV station and he was probably right because we were able
to watch Grey’s Anatomy. Bob, of course, could not stay awake and
went to bed.
At 5:00 am Bob announced to me he was going to get up and put the
coffee on. I told him ‘no way’, everyone else stayed up to watch the
computer. He asked me every 20 minutes until 7:15.
Since we were in the RV capital of the world, Elkhart, Indiana, I
decided it would be a good idea to visit some dealers to compare
prices with back home. After driving around for 2 hours, we found a
dealer named Sun Coast, that was open. We looked and couldn’t
believe what we saw. Denny spotted one he fell in love with. We
didn’t need a salesman, we had Denny!! Paula asked the guy what our
RV was worth. He didn’t really answer the question but rather came
back with what they would give us if we purchased the one Denny
liked. We think he might have felt sorry for us as he mentioned a
couple movies that have been released regarding RV travel and
geriatrics.
Well, guess what? We are still——– in Elkhart, Indiana until
Monday sometime, Yup, we traded up. The paperwork is all done but
we have to wait for them to detail and check all the systems. Oh, by
the way, it is a 2003 Tioga Winneabago. The salesman was so nice as
to offer his blacktop parking lot on the highway in the middle of
town for us to stay the next couple nights. He did warn us not to go
past the fence as it is laser activated. After going to Walmart and
getting lost in Elkhart (yes – even with a GPS) I found an add in the
visitors guide for a lovely (such a deal) campsite on the Elkhart
County Fair Grounds next to the live stock barns. We set up much
faster tonight. We did have a little trouble hearing each other
because what we didn’t realize was we are also next to the railroad
and a train goes by every 15 minutes. We aren’t sure if the noise
from the train (with the windows open) is worse than the noise from
the air conditioner (with the windows shut). But, everything has a
silver lining (if you look really, really hard) there was no one here
to take our money. In addition, there is going to be a cattlemens
convention on Sunday right here in this very campground. Also, due to
our new purchase, tonights dinner was hot dogs and beans. Did I
mention we can’t have a fire here. Not to worry – Paula brought two
citronella candles. So, here we sit by the candle in our 4 camp
chairs, typing on my lap. We were smart enough to purchase a 33
gallon tote that we were able to use for a picnic table. It didn’t
take too much energy to swat the horse flies.
Seriously, we thank God for the safe travel and all the fun we have had.
That’s all for tonight.
