10 Ways Young Kids can Learn Keyboarding

We spend a lot of money on keyboarding programs. We do this to track student progress and I fell victim to this a few years back.  I have changed my mind and believe that by doing authentic tasks, students will learn where the keys are and from there, you can guide them toward proper technique (although I believe this is overrated.  I type fine but can not use my right pinky at all).  So, here are some ways to get those young kids typing without having to resort to games.

They can type:

  1. usernames and passwords – to login into to the computer
  2. spelling words
  3. their first and last name
  4. responses to a teacher’s message board (or blog)
  5. journal entries (instead of writing them)
  6. letters to Mom and Dad (like a Friday letter that summarizes the week)
  7. collaboration with fellow students using a wiki (like PBwiki)
  8. creative story writing
  9. read-write-think (anything from here)
  10. report
