I first heard about the updated ISTE standards by following NECC 2007. As educators we can still close the our classroom door and isolate our students from being world citizens. These standards challenge us to look beyond the four walls of our classroom and prepare our students to participate in the Web 2.0 World and beyond. If you are interested, I would like to invite you as guest on our upcoming show (It’s Elementary Webcast on http://edtechtalk.com) On Monday August 27th We will be discussing Essentials in the Web 2.0 Classroom. You can find more info on our wiki; http://ourwebcast.wikispaces.com/Agenda for Summer

    Here is my lesson plan

    ABSTRACT OF LESSON
    Name: Crystal Sanfilippo
    Date: 12-9-07

    Web Site URL: http://www.solarviews.com/eng/homepage.htm
    Grade Level: 5th

    Summary of Web Site
a.) The students can find out statistics and information about earth and other planets.
b.) Figure out their what their weight would be on any planet.
c.) Students can type in their birthdays and find out how many days old they would be on certain planets.

The student will get to the website by clicking on the science link from my web page.

    Assessment Strategy:
The students will go to this web site and research 2 planets of their choice. In their research they will have to give specific information about the planet. The students will also have to give their weight and age on those 2 planets. The students will draw a picture of the two planets and then compare and contrast each of those planets to earth.
How will you know that they learned? I will know that they have learned because the students will type their work and hand it in to me. I will go on the web site and check their information to make sure it is accurate.

The students will save their work to the computer. Each student has their own screen name and password so that other students cannot get into their saved work.

Performance Indicator MST4.E.PS1A: Students will use information from a website to describe 2 planets using facts about them.

Teaching Objective: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of a website and use the information to draw a picture of each of the planets and include specific information about each planet. The students will have to include at least 10 important facts about each of the websites, and also record their weight and age on that planet. The students will learn about planets and how they are different from earth.

    Universal Design for Learning Strategies

Every student doesn’t learn in the same way so any student that needs extra help will be able to do the lesson in a different way.
Strategy: The students will have to find out their weight and age from the planets, but if they are having trouble writing down the examples and putting them into their own words they can copy and paste them. Also if they cannot draw the planets they can print a picture of them out.
How will you address the strategy in your lesson:? I will make sure to point out that some students may have difficulty putting the facts into their own words. I will also make sure to show them an example of what I want them to do for the lesson.

Students have the opportunity to express themselves in a different ways.
Strategy: If the students are having trouble expressing the 10 facts, they can choose 5 that are the most interesting to them.
How will address the strategy in your lesson? I will make sure to let them know that sometimes finding 10 is difficult, so they may choose 5 that mean the most to them. I will also give them the opportunity to work with a partner that can assist them.

Students can get engaged in different ways and deals with emotions.
Strategy: Pair these students with a partner.
How will address the strategy? I will make sure I point out to the students that I chose the planets that I did for the example because they are planets that I have always been interested in.

Lesson Plan, ‘What Do I Say,’ An Animal Book

“What Do I Say,” An Animal Book

    Lesson created by, Heather Nace
    Intended for Pre-school students
    12/6/07

    1. The website needed for this lesson can be found at:
    http://www.enchantedlearning.com/whatdoisay/

    Web Site Summary
The Enchanted Learning website is a great place for teachers, students and parents to find appropriate educational resources. “What Do I Say,” is an early reader book about animal sounds, animal pictures and animal colors. The book is found on this web page: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/whatdoisay/. The story is told through the use of simple text and repetition. The bright colors, simple images, and use of alliteration will capture the attention of young children while they learn about the animals. The children will also be exposed to a desktop computer where they will become familiar with using the computer mouse.

    2. Objective according to Bloom’s Taxonomy: The objective of this lesson is the Comprehension of the information learned from the story. Students will be able to identify each animal by name, color and sound.

    New York State Standard:
    Standard ELA1.PK.L13:
    Language for Information and Understanding
    Performance indicator: ELA1.PK.L13.01
Students acquire information from nonfiction text.

    3. Students will:

Become familiar with using the mouse
Identify the color of each animal
Make the sounds of each animal
Make home connection with child and parent
Draw a picture of an animal and re-tell the story

3.a. How will children access the web site?
The pre-school student is discovering computers for the first time. The parent will guide and help the student in using the desktop computer. The children will get to the correct site by the guidance of the parent connecting to the proper URL. If a parent does not have computer access they may utilize the computer we have in our classroom. If they are not able to come to school while we are open they may use a computer at the community center or the local public library.

    3.b. Follow-up Assessment:
Children will use the computer to do a shared reading with the parent. Students will become familiar with using the computer mouse; they will click on each animal picture. Student will make a picture of an animal from the story once they have completed the website activity.

3.c. To check for understanding and comprehension:
The teacher will print a copy of the book, “What Do I Say?”, in black and white and give a copy to to each student. The teacher will perform a shared reading with the classroom and have the students identify the color of each animal and then color it in on their book. The teacher will then have the students reproduce the sounds of each animal. The teacher will assess the students through the use of a check list: name of animal, color of animal according to book, the sound the animal makes, and the ability to make a picture of one of the animals from the story. Children that are at a higher level will be asked to re-tell the story using their own words and the teacher will write down what the child says.

    4. Saving your work

Students are unable to save their work and the book can be printed out at the end of the activity. They are not doing an activity that requires work to be saved on the computer.

    Universal Design for Learning Strategies

    Recognition Learning:
    Strategy: Support Background Knowledge

The children will use their previous knowledge about animals and birds.
    Strategic Learning:
Strategy: Offer Flexible Opportunities for Demonstrating Skill

The children will be exposed to a new learning experience using the desktop computer instead of just having the book read to them by the teacher.
    Affective Learning:
Strategy: Offer a Choice of Rewards

Allow students to make up a play in the classroom according to the book. Display the students work in the hallway and let them share their experience using computers.

    ABSTRACT OF LESSON
    Name:Collett Pirdy
    Date: 12-10-2007

    1.Web Site URL:http://www.coolmath-games.com
This web site can work with many grade levels, but I am choosing to focus on grades 3-4.

2.Summary of Web Site Kids can:
a.)Play games that use math (ie lemonade stand)
b.)Practice addition subtraction mult and divison
c.) Learn about how math creates art such as fractals and crop circles

3.Students can access the web site from the computer lab in the school or with a computer with in the classroom if we are so lucky. It will not be given for take home work because not all students have computers in their homes.

    4.Assessment Strategy:
The students will take a time test on multiplication facts to build their strength in recall. The facts they are being tested on are those that should be in memory. This is not meant to be a test grade, or to give students anxiety. The students will go to this page several times a month to build their skills and will create personal folders to track their success.

To be sure that students are taking in the lesson and understanding the multiplication facts, I will look for them to answer at least 20 questions in the 60 seconds and miss at most four questions.

    5. I will teach the students how to take a screen shot and email the page to me as an attachment so that I can see how many they answered in total and how many they got right.

    END OF ABSTRACT OF LESSON
Performance Indicator: MST: Students know single digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.
    This includes:

    * Special role of zero
    * Multiplication and division facts through 144
    * Application of identity elements of addition and multiplication in learning and understanding number facts

Teaching Objective:Students will be able to state the answer to the given multiplication problem

    Universal Design for Learning Strategies
    Recognition Learning:
Strategy:text to speech utility to read e-text
If there is a student who has a hard time reading the screen or comprehending the question on the page I will find a way to have a voice read the question to them and if this in not possible I will arrange for an aide to be in the room to read the question to the student (this extra time will be taken into consideration when looking at the number answered)

    Strategic Learning:
Strategy:Set of pre-chosen links to relevant web sites
If the student is having a hard time with multiplication facts and recalling them with accuracy they can have a list of sites to explore that will help them to understand or find more strategies that will help them to multiply. This would be on top of the work we would be doing as a whole class.

    Affective Learning:
    Strategy: collaborative learning groups
If the work as a whole class is not enough, the students can have the option to break into small groups with varied abilities and play games and give personal tips on how to increase their ability to recall multiplication facts.

    ABSTRACT OF LESSON
    Yael Wollman
    12/9/2007

    1) Web Site URL: http://www.earthcam.com/usa/massachusetts/boston/?cam=streaming&cam_type=streaming
    Grade Level: 5-6

    2) Summary of Web Site:
a.) Get a live up close view of the hundreds of exotic fish in the New England Acquarium’s Great Ocean Tank.
b.) Enhance their study of one particular fish.
c.) Observe the interaction of different species within one environment.

3)Students will access the website via a clearly marked link in the science section of “My Learning Center” of my Teacher Page.

    4)Assessment Strategy:
The students will observe the shark in particular, and record their observations regarding all details of it’s appearance and behavior in the tank. They will also note 2 more more fish they noticed in whatever detail they have provided. All initial observations will be marked in a quicknote on the side of the webpage, and then saved, and copied into a word document, which they will save onto their personal student accounts.

5)I will know the students have learned as they will create (and hopefully have time in class to present) posters with photos and information, both observed and obtained from the internet, regarding either the shark or their other observed fish of choice.

    6) Teaching Objective: Comprehension: (describe) The students will be asked to describe different fish and their characteristics.

    END OF ABSTRACT OF LESSON

    Performance Indicator:
    MST4.alt.LE4A:
Students identify a few basic life functions of common living specimens, namely, sharks and some fish observed in the New England Acquarium.

    Universal Design for Learning Strategies

    Recognition Learning:
    Strategy:
I will support their background knowledge and what they have learnt both in my class and previously about the species in the ocean. I will provide multiple media opportunities to understand and view the ocean’s species, by using a website, and asking for written (or, typed) observations, as well as asking for a creative poster to display what they have learnt.

    Strategic Learning:
    Strategy:
All students will be able to demonstrate their own skills being that this project is very open to creativity and adaptability to the students various interests and capabilities. I am only interested in assessing their observations skiils, and in minor additional research, so each student has an opportunity to present what he feels confident with.

    Affective Learning:
    Strategy:
I will provide flexible opportunities to address students interests and capabilities of research. While sharks may be easier to observe and research, stronger and more interested students have the ability to research other fish which they are more unfamiliar with.

    ABSTRACT OF LESSON
    Name: Elizabeth LaRocca
    Date: December 11, 2007

    Web Site URL: http://www.starfall.com/n/level-a/learn-to-read/load.htm?f
    Grade Level: Kindergarten

Summary of Web Site (What can kids do here?)
a.) Children can listen to stories that have a certain sound repeated, such as “at” ending words.
b.) Children can do matching activities that restate the sound that was repeated in the story.
c.) Children can watch movies that elaborate the importance of the skill that they were using in the previous activities.

How will the kids get to the web site?
I will set up a bookmark on all of the classroom computers and during the time where children use the computers, I will do a brief modeling of what to do. I will also be available during the computer time so that if children need help, I can go over and help them.

    Assessment Strategy:
What will the kids do? Children will listen to the story, The Big Hit. This story introduces the sound of a short vowel. After they listen to the story, children will play both activities that go along with the story. These activities are located to the left of the story. Once children finish the first activity, they will print their finished product and then they will move on to the second activity. Once they complete the final activity, the children will print it out. When both activities are printed out, I will have children come up to me with their print outs and I will check them to see if they are correct. As I go through it with the child, they will talk about the activity.

How will you know that they learned?
When I review their print out, I will be able to see which children completed the activities correctly and which students did not.

How will the kids save their work (if applicable)? The children will not need to save their work because they will be printing out their work and I will save the print outs.

    END OF ABSTRACT OF LESSON
Performance Indicator: Students read and listen to story to begin to collect ideas that will be needed to use in the activity.

Teaching Objective: Students will practice creating words with the short ‘i’ sound by choosing the correct beginning sound to go with the picture.

    Universal Design for Learning Strategies
    Recognition Learning:
    Strategy: Additional Background Knowledge
How will you address the strategy in your lesson:? Before this lesson I will put the children into small reading groups, that are based on the level they are at. In these small groups I will work with the children on phonemic awareness, sounding out words, and picture/word recognition. This prior knowledge will allow the children to use what they have from these small groups
to help them with the activity in this website.

    Strategic Learning:
Strategy: Option to Work in Collaborative Groups
How will address the strategy in your lesson? The children will be grouped in small groups with about 3 children per group. There will be a mix of levels that each child in the group has. This will allow the lower level children to be helped by the higher level children.

    Affective Learning:
Strategy: Collaborative learning groups with different roles
How will address the strategy? In this lesson, the children will be grouped up together and each child will have a certain role in the activity. One child will listen and read the story out loud to the other children, two children will work together on the activity, and all the children will print out their work and show the teacher.

    END OF ABSTRACT OF LESSON
Performance Indicator:New York State Social Studies Standard 3: Geography. Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography and distribution of people, places and environments over the Earth’s surface.

Know the meaning of key map terms equator, prime meridian, etc. and how to use a map. How to use longitude and latitude. How to use a compass and to locate north, south, east, west. Locate continents and other important land marks around the globe.

    Universal Design for Learning Strategies

    Recognition Learning:
    Strategy: Support students background knowledge.
Make sure that each student has a grasp on the assignment and is able to point out the main concepts and ideas of assignment. Use prior knowledge that will guide students along to learning new things. Have an aide available to assist in activity in classroom.

    Strategic Learning:
Strategy: Use different options for different activities. Such as a slide show for presentations.
Some students may not be able to follow along with computer instruction. Make sure that each learning style is met using different options in the classroom. Using pre-set links to websites could be helpful.

    Affective Learning:
Strategy: Option to use Internet instead of library.

Incorporate computers and the internet into instruction. Have students use the Internet to discover and research different topics visiting different websites.
