Camping is for….stars? or iPods? or cell phones? – Depends on the Generation!
Last night I went camping with good friends of mine in Sprague Brook state park near Kissing Bridge Ski Resort which is near Buffalo, NY. The stars and company were spectacular. My god-son, age 11, knows that I have a video iPod and he asked if he could watch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He had the Seventh Book, but wanted to brush up on the goblet and half blood prince before beginning The Deathly Hallows.
I thought for a moment – wait a minute – we are out here camping and we should be watching the fire. But, on the other hand, it was about 10:30 and we spent hours shooting the breeze already. So, if his parents were ok with that, I did not mind. So, they thought, and thought, and thought and finally gave in. Off he went to watch the movie.
My friends and I started the typical parental conversation – kids today…blah, blah, blah. I said if we had the opportunity to watch a movie on a small BEAUTIFUL screen when we were 11, wouldn’t we?. My friends did not agree with me, but then a cell phone rang.
My friend got a phone call on his cell from a buddy of his. They spoke about nothing for about 10 minutes – when I say nothing, I mean nobody wanted anything, they were just picking on each other and friends – good wholesome guy talk. (golf, food, the Bills, the Sabres…)
So, I said to my friend – did you enjoy your conversation and he said yes. And then I said – when we went camping as kids, our parents did not get phone messages at 10:30…did they?
The love for technology is in the hands of the beholder – let’s face it – we love to be with the stuff – where ever we are
