Transferring files from a “smoked logicboard” eMac with Firewire

A good friend of mine called me the other day crying. She said that her eMac was not able to finish booting up. I said to her, we can fix this, don’t worry. My trust in apple products was at the heart of my counseling. I did not think that the logicboard could have been smoked, but alas it was, so I had to get her data off before the logicboard could be replaced.

Here is how I did it:

  • Materials:
    • 1 6 pin to 6 pin Firewire cable
    • 1 iMac – good computer
    • 1 eMac
  • Procedure
    • turn on the iMac
    • turn on the eMac while holding “T” key down – this will get the eMac in target disk mode Target Disk Mode
      • the result of target disk mode is that the eMac will mount on the iMac (the hardrive icon of the eMac will show up on the iMac
    • transfer any files that need to be moved (e.g. iTunes library, iPhoto Library, documents etc.)
    • unmount the eMac

Go to Steve Jobs’ camp to get reprogrammed  – Macs don’t die, Macs don’t die, Macs don’t die ;-)
