Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age, Universal Design for Learning
By David Rose
What will education be like in the digital age?
“What Brain Research Tells us About Learner Differences” – chapter 2
- what does the brain look like when we learn
- what the learning brain is about
- what do we do when we learn
- what parts for the brain are involved
- how do kids differ
Brain Functions and Anatomy
Rear Cortex – recognizing things and objects and ideas in the world (recogntion networks) – rear part of the brain
Front Cortex – act skillfully and strategically in the world – strategic networks
Central part of the brain – help us evaluate what’s important and significant to the learner
When someone learns, we are usually learning something from the environment, what do we do with those, how do we act on them, and lastly, what is important in this environment for me
The key thing for Universal Design for Learning is that students differ in:
- the way they recognize things
- the way they act on things
- the values with which they evaluate their environment
“Why We Need Flexible Instructional Media” – Chapter 3
- Focuse on the learning materials, the instructional technologies and the learning methods
- traditional media – the same story told to use in the same way
- the digital media can be made to adapt to individual differences
- new media can be transformed, networked and be marked up
- media can contain the same information but display it and engage kids in different ways
“What is Universal Design for Learning” – Chapter 4
- Design Learning Environments in the Digital Age
- learning environments that take advantage of new technologies
- UDL for Education means:
– set goals for a wide range of students
– how are methods designed to respond to individual differences
– applies to the evaluation and assessment of learning (varying assessments,
Principles
- multiple means of respresentation
- multiple means of expression
- multiple means of engagement
Chapter 5 approaches goals – using UDL to set clear goals
Chapter 6 – materials and methods for reaching goals
- what are the things one needs to be concerned with in building a curriculum
Chapter 7 – focuses on assessment – how do we make assessements that respond to individual differences
Chapter 8 – “Making Universal Design for Learning a Reality.”
- the purchase and application of technology
- administrative support
- teacher training
- roles of different types of teachers
- how does one fund UDL
