Vocabulary – Defined with the Dictionary Tool-tip – a OLPC Tip

Defining Vocabulary words is common practice in schools today. Most students use the glossary of the text book or a dictionary. For those in a One Laptop Per Child School, using Firefox and the add-on, the dictionary tool tip, can accomplish this task and a little bit more.

This assumes that you have downloaded Firefox – if not – Get Firefox

Next, go get the dictionary tool-tip – make sure that you restart Firefox before using the dictionary because if you don’t, the add-on will not work

You are now ready to get those vocabulary words defined.

The vocabulary words need to be on a web page in order to use the dictionary tooltip. So, use your web page, your blog or your wiki or type them in to the comment section of this post.

Once the vocabulary words are on the web,

  1. Double Click on the word – or RIGHT click
  2. When a small icon pops up, roll your mouse over the icon
  3. Choose your dictionary
  4. Copy and Paste the definition to:
    1. QuickNote
    2. a Word Processor
    3. a Spreadsheet
    4. to the comment section of a post
    5. Google Doc or Spreadsheet
    6. other
