The Pros and Cons of Comment Moderation in the Classroom

To moderate or not too moderate, that is the question. I have been experimenting with an eduBlogs blog the last few weeks and here are my conclusions.

To Moderate To Not Moderate
  1. Ensures that inappropriate comments are not posted by students
  2. Slows down the collaboration process because you need to be logged in to Word Press in order to approve
  1. Whatever the students post displays immediately
  2. Speeds up collaboration because students do not need to wait for you to approve of their messages.

My Recommendation: Moderate on the Fly

  1. Use Tabbed Browsing (Firefox, Safari or IE 7)
  2. Before the kids post comments, have the admin section of your blog open so that you can quickly read the comments and approve or disapprove of them
  3. Have a sponge activity for the kids to do while they await moderation
