Journal Writing with Blogs

I was at the printer this morning and found a lesson plan template for a 2nd grade teacher.  As I glanced down, I noticed that the kids did journal writing every day.  And a “oh, yeah, I used to do,” that thought popped into my head.

When I taught 3rd and 4th grade we used to do journal writing every day.  The journal was shared with kids in the classroom and me every day.  But, we were never able to look at one person’s journal all at once.  Blogs can change that.

In a perfect world, each student would have their own blog – but …. another day.

So, let’s talk about commenting to a teacher blog.

A teacher could post a variety of writing prompts and have the kids type in their entries when they have an opportunity during the day.  If you were in a OLPC (one laptop per child class) this is a no-brainer.  If you were in a classroom with clusters, you could do learning centers.  If you were in a scheduled lab environment, you could journal on the blog at least once each week.

You can even have kids journal for homework.

Talk about an instant writing portfolio that can EASILY be shared with whomever is interested.
