The Five Basic Steps of Facilitating with Technology

If you plan to use technology as a facilitation tool, be prepared to take these steps:

1. Determine if there is a need for facilitating with technology.

2. Select the right technology for the right purpose.

3. Do session pre-work.

4. Take the measures needed to create a successful session.

5. Do follow-up tasks

To provide real-time documentation of group process and results (skype and google docs)

Technology’s ability to generate anonymous feedback makes it a natural for use by groups who still fear retribution for giving a boss critical comments (google doc)

Group technologies can be organized according to five categories:

1. Videoconferencing

2. On-line groupware

3. Audience response systems

4. Audio teleconferencing

5. Fixed location groupware
